History

In April 1972 Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari finished first and second in the Imola 200 on Ducati’s 750 desmo V-twins. That win put Ducati on the map as a maker of big sports bikes, and in 1974 the factory built a road-going replica: the 750 Super Sport.

Only 401 were made, to homologate the bike for racing. It was the only round-case V-twin with desmodromic valves to reach production, and its green-painted frame gave it the nickname ‘Green Frame’. Today the 750 SS is one of the most important and most valuable classic Ducatis.

What to check when buying

  • Many ‘Green Frames’ are replicas or conversions of a 750 Sport or GT. A fake is worth a fraction of the real thing, so always have the bike inspected by a specialist or the Ducati register.
  • Check frame and engine numbers and ask for the full history and documentation.
  • Setting up desmo valves and bevel drives is precision work. Ask who has maintained the bike.
  • The fibreglass tank can be damaged by ethanol fuel such as E10. Inspect it carefully from the inside.
  • Have a genuine 750 SS valued for insurance.
